Basement Flooding - J&R Contracting - Toledo, OH, Northwest Ohio

Spring is almost here – hallelujah! We are all looking forward to warmer weather, but with rising temperatures comes spring rain and water run-off. All the water from snow melt and ground thaw, coupled with rain, has to go somehow and unfortunately, it can back-up into your basement if you’re not prepared.

Now is the time to make sure your insurance policy covers a basement back-up. The coverage for basement back-ups is called “Back-Up of Sewer and Drain.” Call your insurance agent to confirm the “Back-Up of Sewer and Drain” portion of your policy and its limits.

The following recommendations can help you avoid a basement back-up and thus, a call to J&R Contracting Co.

1. Inspect Gutters and Downspouts – Make sure your gutters and down spouts are cleared of any ice and debris. Also extend downspouts at least 5 feet away from your home’s foundation.

2. Check the Sump Pump – Test your sump pump to ensure it is operational. Review our Sump Pump Checklist here.

3. Examine Basement Walls – Look closely for any cracks in your basement walls. If you see any, consider a basement waterproofing solution to prevent water from seeping in through the cracks.

4. Grade Your Soil – Inspect the grading of soil around your house or business to make sure it slopes away from the foundation, ensuring proper water run off.

5. Store Items in Plastic Bins – Pack personal items and holiday decorations in plastic storage containers, storing them on shelves rather than the floor. In the event of a basement back-up, J&R Contracting can not only repair your property, but also salvage contents that have been damaged.

Spring weather is unpredictable and while these steps won’t guarantee a dry basement, they will help prevent water damage that can result from spring rains and back-ups.
